Rapid prototyping helps teams answer expensive product questions before committing to full implementation. Usability testing then reveals whether intended users can understand and complete important tasks. The objective is not to validate the team’s preferred design. It is to identify risk, improve the workflow, and create evidence for product decisions.

Match prototype fidelity to the question
Sketches and flows for information architecture and early concepts
Clickable wireframes for navigation, sequence, and task understanding
High-fidelity prototypes for visual hierarchy, content, and interaction detail
Technical prototypes for data, integration, performance, or AI feasibility
Limited production pilots for real workflow and operational evidence
Test realistic tasks, not feature opinions
Give participants a goal and enough context to behave naturally. Avoid explaining the interface or asking whether they like a screen before observing whether they can use it.
Measure completion, errors, hesitation, unnecessary steps, questions, confidence, and the participant’s understanding of what happened.
Recruit participants who represent the decision
A small number of relevant participants can reveal major workflow problems, but participant quality matters more than convenience. Include differences in role, expertise, device, accessibility needs, and operating environment where they affect the product.
Prototype AI behavior honestly
Represent variable quality, waiting time, and uncertainty
Test citations, editing, approval, correction, and escalation
Include difficult and incomplete requests rather than ideal examples only
Explain when output is simulated so participants do not infer unsupported capability
Separate user-experience findings from model-performance evaluation
Turn findings into product decisions
Group observations by severity, frequency, affected workflow, and business impact. Resolve critical comprehension and task failures before polishing minor visual details.
